“AltSchool used their data – How do educators break up the day, the week? Where do students like to work? What kinds of instruction need which kinds of spaces? – and developed a physical plan. In September 2017, AltSchool opened its first purpose-built space and its eighth lab school, a middle school located in a turn-of-the-century masonry building in Manhattan’s Union Square. The design, by A+I, incorporates the elements of the other project-based learning environments I’ve described. Classrooms, visible through glass partitions, have a variety of nooks and crannies, including window seats and upholstered benches (their version of “caves”), as well as more easily recognizable tables for eight.”
